Google Now Offering Results More Integrated with Online Social Networking

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the folks at the online social networking service Twitter may be at risk of experiencing dangerously swelled heads.

First, Facebook, arguably the most influential online social networking site, redesigned its site that allowed users to post their status updates in a more Twitter-like style. That move caused much controversy with Facebook users, but most of the hemming and hawing has apparently died down.

Now, Internet search giant Google has rolled out their own Twitterish online social networking search service. Right now it’s called Google Search Options—a rather clunky name and one that will probably change as the service evolves. But what does the new online social networking service do? The most interesting feature is the one that gives Internet searchers the opportunity to filter search results by time.

Here’s why that’s important. Normally, if you did a search for Greece on Google, you’d get the top results like the Wikipedia page for Greece and possibly the homepage of the Greece tourist board. But what if you just want to know what kind of online social networking buzz is going on regarding Greece? Google search options lets you choose results that were just created or changed recently—within the last 24 hours, for example. Here’s Google’s instructional video for Search Options:

If you’re familiar with Twitter and Twitter search online social networking services, then you’ll probably be comfortable with these new search features. So does this mean Google is scared of Twitter? Probably not, at least not yet. But if Google is now taking cues from the online social networking micro-blogging site, that just shows just how useful Twitter and online social networking search is gearing up to be.

Twitter Quitters — Catch ‘Em While You Can!

Use Twitter as a Business Marketing Online Tool

Use Twitter as a Business Marketing Online Tool

There’s been a significant amount of buzz about the so-called “Twitter Quitters”, those folks who use Twitter for a few short weeks, become bored and ultimately walk away from the social networking site.  On ClickZ, author Sean Carton takes a rather skeptical position, essentially writing a would-be obit for Twitter before it’s even toddler-age.

So should we all hang our heads and admit defeat?  Not at all!

Although there are certainly “Twitter Quitters” out there and Carton has a good point (complete with stats to back him up), the fact remains that people ARE jumping on the bandwagon.  Even if they are only there for a month, it’s an opportunity to capture their attention.  Therein lies an opportunity for savvy marketers.

Let’s face it — even if you knew you only had 30 days with a would-be client, wouldn’t you make the most of those 30 days?  Consequently, entrepreneurs and business professionals would be wise to eschew the bad news inherent in the “Twitter Quitter” phenomenon and embrace business marketing online for all it’s worth.

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Harry Gold of ClickZ.com states, “Online marketing firms who have search, online media, creative development and tracking technology under one roof are the only entities really qualified to deploy and manage a robust social media channel alive with good content, creative and interactive applications.”

Why?

Consider this: With the numerous applications, technology know-how and research that social media platforms need to promote your company and brand, why would you make your PR or HR department responsible? Trust SEO experts who have the knowledge, research skills and familiarity with your company to provide the best management of your social networking sites. Would you trust your research and development department to design your Website? Probably not, although R & D may provide design insight and suggestions.

A comprehensive SEO company, which provides not only on site search engine optimization, but also integrates analytics and tracking, creativity both in text and visual design, and is knowledgeable about the workings of social media platforms will benefit your company the most. It may be difficult to release the control of branding to SEO experts, but they do have a vested interest in your business and will want to continue working with you.

Here are 5 components that a SEO firm and SEO experts should do to ensure your brand identity is being promoted throughout social media networks:

  1. SEO experts should have a strong grasp and understanding of social media and how to use them with specific markets as well as how to target specific audiences. SEO experts must be actively involved in more than one social network, so they can accurately and effectively manage your social media campaign.
  2. SEO experts should be able to attract and find friends and contacts across your social networks to build on-going relationships and brand identity, trust and expertise. SEO experts should be able to show you their active social networks and explain how to use each platform for your targeted audience and how your goals can be accomplished through social media.
  3. SEO experts should be expert bloggers in their fields as well as have the research knowledge to blog about your industry. Comprehensive SEO firms know how to track blogs, utilize blogs and communicate with bloggers.
  4. SEO experts know how to effectively manage and combine SEO and social media with other off site platforms including paid search to maximize your brand identity and expertise. SEO experts should also be ethical, so that you can reach the top of the search engines without negative consequences from the search engines.
  5. SEO experts should be knowledgeable and effectively manage Web analytics to track, report and respond to actions and events regarding your Website and social media campaigns
