5 Social Media Trends for Business in 2010

2009 is almost behind us, but a remarkable year for social media for business, which leads to an even more important year for business in 2010.  Where is your business and social media? Do you have your Facebook Fan Page up and running with weekly updates? A fully optimized and completed LinkedIn profile and group? Do you participate in weekly group discussions, with expertise in your field with your network? Are your Twitter posts timely, offer valuable information, and engage readers?

If you’re still in a conundrum about the advantages and importance of engaging with social media for your business, then the following social media trends for 2010 from Duct Tape Marketing should really get the fires burning.

1. All search results will become instant, real time rather than delayed info including reviews, tweets, scores and posts. Facebook and Twitter have already implemented this feature, but the social media trend will have an even greater impact in 2010. Look for Google Wave, Shazam and Red Laser as a few real time applications to appear more often.

2. It’s all about location. Since Twitter and Facebook have already implemented geo-location for tweets and posts, which are used with GPS finding services, other applications for the iPhone will soon be popular in 2010. Location sharing services such as Foursquare and Loopt are already breaking through while review sites such as Yelp! and other sites will be prominent with geo-targeted discounts and coupons. Businesses will be able to receive geo-centric information with just the point of their iPhone and connect with others in their network wherever they travel.

3. Filtering information  will be just as important as SEO with social recommendations in 2010. Reviews of companies’ products and services will play just as an important role as organic search results. Your social network recommendations will also appear in the search results.

4. An important social media trend of 2010 will be total engagement through online applications for small businesses. Look for more Google Apps and Microsoft Office Live applications for businesses as well as online file sharing and storage tools such as Dropbox and Mozy. Online collaboration and project management will use tools such as CentralDesktop,  Backpack, and Basecamp, which will connect clients, marketing firms and other businesses on one shared application online. These online applications will allow less time on the phone and traveling and more on-task productivity.

5. Online and offline will meet and merge. It’s still good business and marketing practice to meet people in person, face to face, to build a trusting relationship. This social media trend will continue in 2010 as more people will attend conferences, chamber meetings, and so forth to meet people and ask for their Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook contact to keep in touch online.

MozyHome works pretty well for me – on both Mac and PC. MozyPro needs a lot work, however – the interface is extremely convoluted and not user friendly at all.

In regards to your point 4, we’re helping clients get set-up with Google Apps. One thing we hope to see in 2010, is Google Wave integrated into the Apps portfolio. There is alot of potential behind Wave, I believe we will see this in 2010.
