McAfee Labs predicts new dangers for Facebook and Twitter users
McAfee Labs published a report stating it expects more cyber-criminal activity to affect Facebook and Twitter in 2010, so be careful when using online social networking. McAfee Labs director of security research and communications, David Marcus said he believes Facebook users in 2010 will see more Facebook applications that are Trojans. Marcus further explained these “rogue” applications will disguise themselves as harmless and useful applications, but when downloaded they will gain access to the unlucky person’s account.
Since Marcus predicts that these fake applications will be sent to people’s inboxes, we think people should read their mail more carefully. No one wants a spammer to find out their personal information that is only for trusted users.
McAfee Labs also cautioned those who use Twitter for online social networking need to be wary of links shortened by bit.ly. and tinyurl.com because these indecipherable links can lead the clicker anywhere (one of our own Search Circus team members was victim of this incident already). Twitter has yet to add a feature that screens out links to dangerous sites, so look at who is providing the link before you click on it.
