Should Apple Buy Yahoo and Drive Website Traffic?

Friday, March 19th, 2010

The hot topic on many Mac forums right now is the rumor that Apple is thinking of replacing Google as the go-to search engine on the iPhone to Yahoo or Bing. Many Mac users are raving that an Apple/Yahoo partnership would drive website traffic to Yahoo and breathe some fresh air into the struggling company.

One Mac forum user, DaveSW states, “Yahoo!’s got services and content that Apple can integrate with the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and Mac. Apple can use Yahoo! search, Webmail, Flickr, etc. instead of MS or Google.”

DaveSW isn’t alone. Bloggers and forum writers have spoken and many think the Apple/Yahoo union would be a good idea. Apple could breathe a new life into Yahoo and give it the platform to take over the mobile market, which could once again drive Web site traffic to Yahoo online.

But what about Google? Some blogs and forums have mentioned that even though Apple and Google have a close relationship now, Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, who sits on Apple’s board leaves meetings when the iPhone is mentioned due to the conflict of interest with Google Android, one of the iPhone’s competitors. This seems like it could be a ticking time bomb and leaves us uncertain of how long the Apple/Google relationship will last.

Although many online forum writers and bloggers have expressed their opinion in favor of the rumored Apple/Yahoo union, many are skeptical that Yahoo has anything to offer the search-titan Google.

Mac forum user, Maflynn wrote, “Why in the world should Apple buy Yahoo! when they’ve failed, their business model is broken and they have nothing to offer Apple?” This user is joined by many who think buying Yahoo! is a waste of time for Apple. Many think it would be more worthwhile for Microsoft to buy Yahoo!, but even that idea sparks a lot of heated debate.

It’s evident that the rumored Apple/Yahoo! union is a hot topic in the Mac forum world, however, it seems we will all just have to wait and see what happens. In the meantime, what do you guys think? Apple buying Yahoo!, genius idea or horrible train wreck of an idea?

Facebook: Online Internet Advertising Giant

Friday, March 12th, 2010

It’s no secret that Facebook is a booming online Internet advertising website. All the big brand advertisers are lining up to advertise with Facebook, being that it is the second-most visited website on the Internet right now. But why do Facebook ads work so well?

Click Z explored the idea and made some interesting points. One thing they wrote about is Facebook’s online Internet advertising has certain characteristics that seem to go against common strategies online Iinternet advertisers have been using for years. For example, most online Internet advertising strategists think the bigger, flashier and more animated the ad, the better. However, looking at Facebook, the ads aren’t huge, they aren’t flashing and jumping out in pop-ups at users. Facebook ads aren’t overwhelming and taking users away from what they want to be doing either. They are just there and they seem to be working. Also when Facebook found that banner ads weren’t working, they eliminated them immediately, which is something many online Internet advertising companies would be afraid to do.

Facebook also has its fan pages, where businesses can use online Internet advertising to promote their business and gain fans. Gaining fans has great financial value because it gives businesses a chance to connect with customers. Click Z said Facebook sells itself “as the best way for brands to reach the masses, make a connection and build long-term value through ongoing communication.” All of these things are true and since checking Facebook accounts has become a daily routine in so many people’s lives, it’s clear that it will continue to be one of the most valuable online Internet advertising platforms around.

MySpace doesn’t seem to be as popular as Facebook, for users or for advertisers. Why do you think that is?

The Added Value of Social Media and Article Submission Marketing

Article writing is as old as the printing press itself, and article submission marketing pre-dates social media marketing; however, many companies do not realize the real value of online article submissions.

There are hundreds of FREE article directories online, which all have general submission guidelines such as article title count, minimum and total word count, self-promotion policies, etc. Although it is time consuming, article marketing is still one of the most reliable and effective methods to promote your expertise in your industry and field. Search engines will index articles faster than any social media update.

Besides submitting your business articles to directories, you’ll want to submit articles to  social networks (provided you have an account) and online forums. According to SearchEngineOptimizationJournal, the following sites are recommended.

1. Industry Related Forums – People come to forums read and learn. Start a new thread with the title of your article, just remember that self-promotion of your company’s products or services is not welcome. Keep it objective and informative.  If you provide solid information, you’ll likely garner interest as well as a following of people leaving comments.

2. Top Industry Blogs – Oftentimes popular industry blogs will allow a handful of guest writers. Pitch your article summary and hope the owner will grant you a spot on his/her blog. These guest spots make for great tweets and more social networking both on an offline!

3. Social Networking Websites – Once you receive the email that “your article has been accepted into 123 Article Directory, then it’s time to submit that link to all the social networks you belong to including social bookmarks.  Some of the best article submission marketing strategies are social bookmarks. Don’t forget your multiple Twitter accounts, LinkedIn, FastPitchNetworking and Facebook accounts as well.
