Social Networking at Work: Good, or Bad?

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Young professionals “like”, “tweet”, “share” and “recommend” on a daily basis. But, how beneficial is social networking for companies?

Frances Pennell-Buck, a UK business consultant said, “The use of social media is essential to team building, well-being and a sense of collective purpose, especially in smaller companies where staff may be isolated at different sites.”

Do you think social media increases work productivity, or hurts the company’s reputation thanks to posts, tweets and status updates?

Can diversions like watching a YouTube video, or looking at pictures a friend uploaded on Facebook improve concentration and be healthy?

If you were allowed to surf the Internet at your leisure, do you think you’d be productive while working?

Companies Need to Adopt a Social Networking Policy

Companies Need to Adopt a Social Networking Policy

A 2010 Deloitte survey found that not only does allowing employees Internet access boost trust, but it also assists in talent retention.

Social networking isn’t always positive. Instant communication to the world can have harmful drawbacks. What happens if employees post rumors, tweet confidential information, or blog about company secrets? It’s easy to do thanks to social media sites.

Then there’s the issue of banning social media where cell phones are as well. Why shouldn’t they be? What’s the difference? If you’re not allowed to text while driving, or talk on the phone, how can you tweet, surf the Internet, or upload pictures on Facebook?

Companies need to look toward social media as a business tool, and either create, or adopt a social networking policy.

One thing that’s for certain is social networking has arrived and isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

#WhatWeLoved about #Twitter in 2010: Trending Topics and #Hashtags

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011
That little sign that we have so much identified as the pound or number sign in the written word is now the best Twitter trend we saw in 2010 otherwise known as the hashtag (#).

Tweeters went from simple one word hashtags such as #quotes to small phrases such as #whatiamdoing and #tiredofthat. Hashtags can become trending topics as well as a means to conduct searches and organize information in Twitter.

What the Trend, a trend-tracking company that monitors every single topic that pops up on Twitter’s global Trending Topics, reported that #’s get the most Tweets and the numbers have greatly increased from 2009 to 2010 (and will increase throughout 2011). So if you want to get your idea, topic, rants/raves or coupon specials noticed, it’s best to start using hashtags in your tweets.

However, don’t get too carried away with those cute little tic-tac-toe symbols, using hashtags for #every #single #word in your tweet could cost you …Twitter could ban your tweets or worse suspend your Twitter account.

#WhatILove about Twitter hashtags is that you can create your own conversations, trending topics and even your own randomness. #ifihadachance and #wheniwasyoung are all random topics that you or your business can reply to to increase your Twitter visibility, sounds silly doesn’t it? Well, it seems to work for many large businesses because…oh…it’s a #funthingtodo (I don’t know if that’s a hashtag, but I like it).

Try creating your own personal hashtag and use it in several of your tweets, then in a week or two search for your hashtags and you might just find that others are using it too. What do you sell or promote? A creative hashtag could be just what you need to get the word out about your company. This is also a fun way to attract members to your dating or online gaming site. You never know of the possibilities!

#hashtag reminders

  • Use the pound sign in front of your word or phrase
  • Don’t use a hashtag on every word in your tweet
  • Do answer other hashtags and use them in your own tweet
  • If you’re using a phrase, no spaces between words allowed.
  • Create a #ff tweet and use your hashtag too.
  • Hashtags can be anywhere in your tweet, but should be before your short link.

Social Media Marketing Predictions for 2011

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Check out whats in store for social media marketing in 2011.

Check out what's in store for social media marketing in 2011.

Tim Ferriss, a social networking investor and author of two #1 New York Times bestsellers recently told Mashable his top predictions for social media marketing in 2011. Here are two of his four important predictions for social media marketing.

According to Ferriss, YouTube is currently the second largest search engine in the English-speaking world, yes, even more popular than Yahoo. What does this mean for your social media marketing strategy in 2011? This means that YouTube videos combined with video SEO you will be using one of the largest platforms to reach people online. Get ahead of the game now by creating a YouTube channel and start optimizing and putting up videos today (oh, and Search Circus can help you too!).

Email will matter again in 2011. According to Ferriss,  “email addresses are a safer long-term investment than social media features.” Social media outlets like Facebook send your direct messages to a second tier inbox that many people don’t pay attention to. In email marketing, your message gets sent directly to the person’s inbox and since they opted in, they are more likely to read it. Also since they are logged into their email just to read messages, it makes it more likely that they will read yours. Although social media will still play a prominent role in marketing strategies, it would be smart for many companies that have let email marketing fall by the wayside to resurrect this powerful marketing outlet.
