Would You Watch a Movie on Facebook?

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

It didn’t take long for Facebook to add a new feature to appeal to the movie buff in us.

We already spend countless hours playing around on the social networking site wasting our day, now thanks to the partnership with Miramax, how many more hours will be sucked out of us?

Miramax announced on its blog that it’s partnering with Facebook to launch Miramax Experience, an app that will allow users worldwide to watch movie clips and feature-length films from the studio.

Movies Will Soon Be Available on Facebook

The company goes on to say that there are over 50 million friends on Facebook that mention a Miramax film in their profile, interact with the Miramax page or like the fan pages of Miramax titles and talent like Good Will Hunting,  Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino and more.

The Miramax App is going to offer consumers an experience where they can play games and share their thoughts and feedback with their friends within the Facebook community.

There will even be Facebook Credits and Connect to make it easier to use the service.

Is this partnership annoying, or genius? What’s Facebook’s next trick up its sleeve to get us to spend our entire day surfing their site?

Doesn’t matter. We’re going to check out the new feature, which ultimately, is exactly the intended goal.

Social Media Developments: Innovative, or Annoying?

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Everyday, there seems to be a new social media site feature created that we have to explore. With so much social media marketing and information thrown our way, it’s hard to stay on top of the latest trends.

Here’s two of the newest updates in the social media world.

1. Frozen Bytes – Have you ever wondered what you were doing, or thinking this time last year? Thanks to Facebook’s latest feature, you now have that option.

As you’re surfing the site, past statuses can appear on the right-hand side.

The “On This Day in (insert year here)” message and status shows up usually when you’re looking at friends’ photo albums.

You can “Like” stepping back in social media time, and see what else you had to say back then, or click the “show more” button to see additional status updates.

If Your Friends Like a Feature, Odds Are You Will Too

2. Showing Lists – FourSquare now allows users to create lists to rank the types of businesses they know best, from cupcake making places, coffee shops and malls to popular restaurants. You can create your list, rate your places, and share them with friends. We know that if we see one of our friends frequently visiting a place, we’re more prone to try it ourselves.

Are consumers being confused, and possibly annoyed by the addition of features to social media sites almost on a daily basis? Whatever happened to that saying, “If it’s not broke, don’t try to fix it”?

In the mean time, we’ll still continue to check out the latest trend and probably  “like”, “share”, “post”, “tweet”, or “follow” it.

Social Network News: #Twitter Engages, #Facebook Disengages

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Remember those awkward 1 sided conversations you have had when you meet someone new at a business function? Either you or the other person talks the entire time, and the other person can’t get in a word edgewise, so eventually one of you looks for an excuse to leave the conversation?

Twitter can be like that. One way message. One way communication. Unless you are actively engaging in a 2 way conversation with those who are RT’ing your tweets, responding to tweets – even to just say “thanks” or asking questions to elicit a response from followers. Hashtags are good to use too to engage in conversation with other Twitter users.

Recent social networking news indicates that Twitter is creeping up and over Facebook as far as social engagement goes. Hmm, think mobile users have an advantage here . A global social network platform, Twitter, is and should be part of your viral marketing campaign. Take for example, the death of singer Amy Winehouse on Saturday, July 23, 2011. The news first hit Twitter before traditional news sources could even get to the scene.

According to an article on SitePronews.com, “Twitter is being used worldwide to educate, sell products, and socialize.” Even though Facebook was the forerunner for marketing businesses online through the use of Fan Pages and business apps, Twitter is likely to win in the long run.

Tips for Social Engagement on Twitter for Business

1. Quantity does not equal Quality. This goes both for followers as well as tweets. You can have hundreds of followers and tweets, but if you’re not saying anything of value or builds your reputation or leads to proactive engagement, you might as well not say anything.  Peruse top brands such as Huggies and Starbucks and you may not find a million tweets, but Starbucks does have over a million followers. And makes these 2 brands stick out amongst the other millions of Twitter accounts? Quality engagement with followers.

2. Finding Neverland. Just as any other venture, web site, or business, if you make it, one doesn’t automatically find you (unless it’s a spam bot) or your Twitter profile. So do some legwork here, or have someone do it for you to find your followers. Follow a few, follow their followers, get listed in Twitter directories, etc. Eventually they will come.

3. Share and Auto-tweet are good for business. Part of engagement is sharing others tweets with your followers. Auto-tweet via RSS is also good. Subscribe to an RSS feed from a blog, website, PR, news feed, etc – but not too much. 1-2 auto tweets a day is sufficient. Add a hashtag or prepend the tweet with something original to add your own spin on it. You’ll find more people replying and re-tweeting as well.
