Social Network Profile Abandonment – Social Consequences?

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Three years ago I signed up for many social network profiles so I could test and measure what each one could potentially bring me as an online marketing professional as well as to potential business clients. Two of these profiles were Plaxo.com and FastPitchNetworking.com.

Three years later, I still receive weekly or bi-monthly reminders that I have “connections pending” on both accounts and incentives to “upgrade your account on Fast Pitch Networking” – I haven’t touched either one in over a year. Are there social consequences for setting up social network profiles and then abandoning them?

I setup one Google+ profile a couple weeks ago and haven’t logged back in to see who might want to join one of my circles. However, I am very active with my LinkedIn profile, groups and adding people to my network.

What has been your experience regarding social networking profiles and abandoning your initial efforts either as an individual or business? Should you be active with each profile you have or only remain active with those that bring you the most contacts and potential business?

LinkedIn Skyrockets 109% After Strong IPO

Groupon, Facebook, Ahead?

If Wall Street didn’t know what LinkedIn was, they sure do now. On Thursday, LinkedIn more than doubled in its New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) debut, shooting up 109% to 94.25 in its first day of trading after rising up to 122.70.

The demand of social networking is huge. LinkedIn made $15.4 billion in 2010 and is currently valued at more than $8 billion. Unlike its competitors, the site focuses on business professionals and not teenagers and grandparents who interact among friends and family. Although it’s free to join, about 42% of LinkedIn’s revenue comes from the over 3,500 subscribers who use the site for new hires, followed by 33% from advertisers and 25% from upgrade, paid subscriptions.

The question is raised, was the offering price generous, maybe even too high, and is there a “dot come” bubble forming around social networking? On Thursday, shares were offered at $45, but the stock quickly rose to prices exceeding $100 per share. According to the NYSE, they’ve began slowing down a bit, selling for around $85 per share as of 10:30 this morning – still higher than the $45 per share initial price.

LinkedIn celebrates the social networking IPO's super-charged launch.

The shift to social media is growing rapidly and expected to change how people access content and search for information, which is everything that Google represents.

Weekly Social Networking Trends, Twitter and Google

Weekly Social Networking Trends, Twitter and Google

Twitter OAuth – If you have a Twitter account or two or three, you probably received this email in the past few days…

Over the coming weeks, we will be making two important updates that will impact how you interact with Twitter applications. We are sending this notice to all Twitter users to make sure you are aware of these changes.

Starting August 31, all applications will be required to use “OAuth” to access your Twitter account.”

If you ever used a 3rd party Twitter application like TweetDeck, TweetMeme or ChromedBird, you had to agree to use OAuth or Open Authentication to sign into your account without asking for a Twitter password.

What does this mean for me?

  • Applications are no longer allowed to store your password.
  • If you change your password, the applications will continue to work.
  • Some applications you have been using may require you to reauthorize them or may stop functioning at the time of this change.
  • All applications you have authorized will be listed at http://twitter.com/settings/connections.
  • You can revoke access to any application at any time from the list.

Twitter Bug –  Appeared early this morning (Tuesday, Sept 21) with a “onmouseover” flaw that upon rolling a mouse over  certain links allowed messages to pop-up and third-party websites to open in your browser. Twitter was flooded with tweets about the Bug this morning; followers suggested to use only 3rd party Twitter programs like TweetDeck and Hootsuite to access your Twitter accounts.  However by noon EST, it seems like the bug has been fixed. Did your account get the Twitter bug today? Did you even notice?

Google Me, a Social Network? – Some social network news sites reported that Google may be coming out with its own social network by early next year; however, it may just a rumor. Google Me, may just be a social utility that Google incorporates into the rest of its products and services. Hmm, we’ll have to follow that social networking trend.
