Optimize Your Sharing Ability for Viral Marketing Success

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

343086822_bd6662ab4dWhat does it mean to have content that’s easy to share? It means that you have tools and services available on your business blog or Website that makes it a breeze for people to send information to their friends. It also makes that it’s a snap for users to share what they like about your content with the greater online community. That makes a viral marketing campaign primed for success.

Many sites like Digg, Reddit, Delicious and StumbleUpon offer small and simple buttons that you can integrate onto your site. Adding the buttons is easy and they’re not at all intrusive; they probably won’t  jar with your overall page design.

When you add social media and social bookmarking buttons to your Website or blog, it suddenly becomes much easier to turn your content into a viral marketing campaign. They’re the Web-based equivalent of word-of-mouth marketing, but these online viral marketing campaigns have the added advantage of being searchable. Good content will be bookmarked and shared a lot, and content that’s shared a lot will be commented a lot on blogs and on Twitter.

So what’s the advantage of these viral marketing campaigns? Sure, a thousand votes on a popular social media site like Digg may get your name out into the online ether, but will it result in increases sales? Maybe. But even if it doesn’t, SEO experts will tell you that the traffic that will flow to your Website will give your search engine rankings a big boost.

Google Now Offering Results More Integrated with Online Social Networking

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the folks at the online social networking service Twitter may be at risk of experiencing dangerously swelled heads.

First, Facebook, arguably the most influential online social networking site, redesigned its site that allowed users to post their status updates in a more Twitter-like style. That move caused much controversy with Facebook users, but most of the hemming and hawing has apparently died down.

Now, Internet search giant Google has rolled out their own Twitterish online social networking search service. Right now it’s called Google Search Options—a rather clunky name and one that will probably change as the service evolves. But what does the new online social networking service do? The most interesting feature is the one that gives Internet searchers the opportunity to filter search results by time.

Here’s why that’s important. Normally, if you did a search for Greece on Google, you’d get the top results like the Wikipedia page for Greece and possibly the homepage of the Greece tourist board. But what if you just want to know what kind of online social networking buzz is going on regarding Greece? Google search options lets you choose results that were just created or changed recently—within the last 24 hours, for example. Here’s Google’s instructional video for Search Options:

If you’re familiar with Twitter and Twitter search online social networking services, then you’ll probably be comfortable with these new search features. So does this mean Google is scared of Twitter? Probably not, at least not yet. But if Google is now taking cues from the online social networking micro-blogging site, that just shows just how useful Twitter and online social networking search is gearing up to be.
