Can a Viral Marketing Campaign = Higher Sales?

Use a viral marketing campaign to blast your message loud and clear.

Use a viral marketing campaign to blast your message loud and clear.

Many times when we sit down to watch TV, we use commercial breaks as a time to get up and get a snack, flip through channels, or leave the room to do some other task. However, there are those commercials we choose to watch over the Internet for their entertainment value. Some of those
commercials were created as part of a viral marketing campaign, and others became viral simply by accident.

You would think that if a company can get you to WANT to watch their commercial, they could also succeed in getting you to want to buy their product. This is not always the case, according to Brandweek. One popular example is the Evian commercial featuring babies on roller skates, dancing and executing acrobatic feats. This commercial recieved over 100 million views, and yet Evian saw sales drop by 28% that year.

The factors that make viral marketing campaigns successful are still up for debate. First, the ads must be something people want to see and pass along to others, and it has yet to be determined what causes a video to go viral. Usually the video needs to be unique, surprising, and humorous.  However, people also must have a want or need for the product being advertised. Read more about viral videos on MarketingVOX.

Twitter’s Viral Marketing Increases Brand Awareness

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Recent studies indicate 20% of all tweets are brand oriented. Companies and consumers are using Twitter more like direct communication to tweet about product and service satisfaction.

The study conducted by a team of researchers at Penn State, “sought out tweets that mention brands to find out why the brand was mentioned — to review a product, inform others, or otherwise.” The findings indicated people tweet about products either through advertising or reaction to the product.

Twitter is one of more powerful micro social networks for producing a strong viral marketing strategy both for large corporations, medium sized businesses and independent entrepreneurs.
